Browney Academy in top 3% of primary schools for Phonics Screening results

We are delighted to announce that NELT primary school, Browney Academy achieved results in the 2023 Phonics Screening Check that placed them in the top 3% of primary schools nationally.

A fantastic 97% of Year 1 pupils at the Durham primary school met the expected standard which provides a firm foundation for successful reading throughout the rest of their education and beyond.

Phonics Lead, Fay Hutchinson, said: "I saw firsthand, the effort and determination the children showed in their daily phonics lessons throughout the year which enabled them to achieve this outstanding result. I am so proud of every child and can't wait to see them continue to use their phonics skills to become excellent, confident readers."

Headteacher, Catherine Harris, added: "Reading is our passion at Browney Academy and I am incredibly proud of our reading offer, not only in phonics but throughout our school. We prioritise reading daily to ensure that our pupils have the tools they need to read well from the very start in the Early Years. Being secure in phonic knowledge unlocks a world of possibilities and supports our pupils to enjoy their reading journey, allowing them to become lifelong readers. Well done to all our staff and pupils on this superb achievement."
